I am impressed with Shimano as a company. While there are huge differences between their high end products versus their low end products, their low end products are comparably better than their competition. Even at the lower prices, their equipment outperforms higher priced products. One such product is the Shimano FXS Spinning Rod. One of the better rods that we’ve tried, this product is worth every dollar that Shimano charges.

Built with an aeroglass blank, the rod is strong and sensitive; this is a fantastic matchup. Use this rod for larger fish, such as trout, as this rod is available from 6’6” to 9’. At a medium heavy power, this rod is a little less sensitive than rods that I would generally recommend for beginners, but because of the aeroglass material, there is a great balance. The line swings through aluminum oxide guides, and the reel sits on a graphite reel seat to take some of the weight off of the rod. And to continue the sleek look that is so consistent in Shimano products, the handle is wrapped in EVA foam grip.

I would recommend this as a great fishing rod for beginners. Not only because it is a quality rod, but because it comes at such a low cost. You can take this out to the sea or to the freshwater and cast long distances. For the more experienced anglers with their own collection of fishing rods already, this rod is great for a backup rod that will last a while. A word of caution: don’t try to go too big with this rod. It’s a great rod for the purpose it serves, but don’t go too big…or you will definitely be going home.

Company Mini-History

Shimano is a fishing tackle company that is most well known for producing bicycles. One of their most famous sponsorship partnerships is Lance Armstrong. It really isn’t surprising that a bicycle company would produce fishing poles, as both require so much precision to create. In addition, both require gears of some type. Just is also a reason that many fishing tackle companies began as clockmakers.

The company was founded in Sakai City, Japan, near the current headquarters, located in Osaka. Shozaburo Shimano founded the company in 1921 in a town that was mainly known for its blacksmithing of swords and gun barrels. After much success, the fishing tackle division was started in 1970. With Shimano rods, you get the best of their technology, efficient and well-balanced materials, and comfort. Similar to the other sports equipment divisions, the quality of their products rank high across the board.
