Are you an avid fisherman that travels a lot by plane? Do you like to hike but don’t want two rods poking you in the butt every time you walk? Then the Shakespeare Telescoping Spinning Rod is a great rod for you. This rod is available at lengths of 4’6” to 6’6”, from Ultra light to Medium action. This light action generally means that the rod is flexible and great for smaller fish, such as crappie or small trout. The spinning reel may take the beginner fisherman a little time to get used to, but it’s truly the reel of choice for anglers that plan to cast a lot. And with the Shakespeare rods, this rod is sturdy and pretty. Be aware that this is just the rod, not the reel.
Of course, the biggest selling point for this rod is the convenience. You can literally take this rod anywhere. Because the rod has so many parts (5 parts and 7 parts respectively), it is fortified with graphite reel seats and stainless steel guides. When the rod is collapsed to its shortest length, it is 13.5 inches. Throw this in your backpack and you are good to go.
Keep in mind that this should not serve as your main rod. This should be used as a backup rod, or a rod that you use when you need to transport it easily and don’t have lots of space. One big downside of this rod is the stiffness, which is something that comes with the type of rod that it is. Because it is made of 5 different sections, it isn’t as flexible as a one-piece rod. This takes a little bit of time to get used to. Also, even though this rod is quite strong for its purpose, be sure of not overextending it. At such a low price, this rod is made for convenience, not for super flexibility. For a first-time rod, I would recommend the Abu Garcia BCX or the Pflueger President Spinning Rod. This rod should be used as your backup.
The Shakespeare fishing tackle company, started in 1896 by William Shakespeare, Jr. (no relation to the famous poet of the late 1500’s), was a testament to what keeps humans moving forward. Being a serious fisherman and natural problem-solver, Shakespeare built an instrument that helped him wind the fishing line evenly onto the spool. This has become an industry standard, helping to prevent tangles in the reel. This careful detail in design and function is one of the things that inspired their earlier slogan, “Built Like A Watch”.
Beginning with the production of reels, the company expanded their reach by acquiring Pflueger, another well-known fishing company that expanded their product line to include rods that are made for beginners and fishing enthusiasts alike. Within the last decade, the company released their Synergy Titanium series, which is comfortable and focuses on beautiful design. They also produce a very popular children’s fishing kit, containing cartoon characters such as Barbie, Scooby Doo, and Looney Toons. Being aesthetically pleasing and functional is what defines Shakespeare rods.
